The flax family are widespread, particularly around the Mediterranean. Perennials and low shrubs, with simple leaves and 5-petalled flowers, opening in the sun, over spring and summer. If you see a shimmering blue field whilst out in the countryside, it may be a flax grown for its seed (linseed) or for fibres

Always beautiful, especially the blue forms, flaxes are also visited by pollinating insects, especially bee-flies and other flies, as well as butterflies. In turn, the seeds are a favoured food source for linnets and goldfinches. There are many generalist moths and (sometimes very specific) beetles that also feed on the seeds and leaves.
